USC finished the 2007 season with a record 11.2 crowned by a convincing 49-17 victory over Illinois in the Rose Bowl. Southern Cal ranked second in the nation in scoring defense, as it allowed only 19 points per game. Also ranked second nationally in total defense, allowing only 273.2 yards per game. Two losses in October (at home against Stanford and Oregon) ruined his bid for a perfect season and national championship.
This season, the rights quarterback is headed by junior Mark Sanchez. Sanchez won the job in spring over Arkansas transfer Mitch Mustain. Sanchez has started just three games that this season. National Preparedness Former player of the year threw seven touchdown passes and five interceptions in limited duty last season.
USC has a deep body of talented runners, including Stafon Johnson, CJ Gable and junior experience second Super Joe McKnight. Johnson ran for 673 yards on just 98 carries to last season for an average of 6.9 yards. He also added five touchdowns. Fullback Stanley Havili, a solid receiver and blocker, should also help USC running attack.
Vidal Hazleton and Patrick Turner as the starting receivers return. This unit has to improve the performance of last season. They should get help Damian Williams, another Arkansas transfer, and Ronald Johnson. All-America tight end Fred Davis has gone to the NFL, leaving junior Anthony McCoy to try to fill the enormous void left by the departure of Davis.
Only a holder of the offensive line profitability last year and what's left guard Jeff Byers. The good news is that many new holders in this group saw extensive playing time last season because of injuries last year started. Center Kristofer O'Dowd played very well last season filling the injured Matt Spanos. Charles Brown, Zack Heberer and Butch Lewis also received a lot of playing time the starters because of injuries.

It gets even better. Coach Carroll believes this year's secondary could be the best that ever coached. It all starts with 6'4 "225 pound free safety Taylor Mays. Kevin Ellison security force, an All-Pac 10 pick last season, combined with Mays to form what could be the best safety tandem in the nation.
The greatest loss of this defense is the game of Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year Sedrick Ellis. Ellis, a nose in front of last season, goes to the NFL. Christian Tupou and Averell Spicer has some big shoes to fill in the attempt to replace Ellis. The rest of the line of defense is in moala Fili All other ground gear and freshman year-American Kyle Moore and Everson Griffin at the ends.
Both kickers, kicker David Buehler and punter Greg Woidneck, return after solid 2007 campaigns. Southern Cal should get excellent performance from the trio shot McKnight, Gable and Ronald Johnson.
In 2008, the Trojans were trying to win 11 games and make a game BCS bowl for the seventh consecutive season. QB Sanchez will have much to do with whether or not USC achieves that goal. USC has an easier schedule than they had last season. The most difficult games at home, including Ohio, Oregon and Arizona State. I expect USC to once again challenge for a spot in the Championship BCS National Game.
