Does coverage for loss from a surge protector diminish over time?
we all know computers lose value faster than luxury sports cars from europe but when a customer of mine recently lost priceless data on a 2002 dell, i said he was fortunate that he was plugged into a surge protector when the surge fried his machine. the price for replacing all parts of this thing was in the 600 dollar range and belkin settled him out with $140. +- change. I talked to my lawyer and he said they got me because the client A: no longer had the box or receipt with date of purchase from the surge protector, and B: no longer had the surge protector which failed on hand. Interestingly, Belkin wouldnt process the claim without us handing over the negligient surge protector first.
I guess this could be a lesson to all of us. Keep the boxes and receipts of anything that has a warranty or guarantee included. I have a $2,000 synth/keyboard plugged in to a surge protector at home and I will keep this in mind. I wish I had kept the box and receipt now, but I will definitely keep the surge protector if anything like this happens (let's hope it doesn't though!).
I have read that surge protectors are not designed to last forever, and they should be replaced every 2 years. I have yet to figure out if this is just marketing stuff to make you buy more surge protectors or if it has some validity to it, but to be on the safe side I will be replacing my surge protector and moving the old one to some less critical equipment. If you have a surge protector fail and it is over 2 years old, they may fail to cover your equipment due to the apparent "limited life span". There are seemingly several loop holes in the $150,000+ coverage claims...
Also, one must note that surge protectors and power strips look almost identical, yet power strips only increase the number of outlets and provide zero surge protection. Make sure you have a true surge protector connected to valuable equipment. Also, the higher the joules rating, the more protection you have.
